Nu-Disco, A Guide Pt. 1

Next to Dubstep, Nu-Disco has got to be one of the fastest growing genres of electronic music out right now.  Inspired by Italo-disco, it stays true to it's roots and is some of the best dance music there is.  Artists like Duck Sauce, Grum, Moullinex and LBCK are some of the breakthrough artists featured. This is another two part installment like the chill dubstep one, so check back in a little while for the second part.
Enjoy the funky nu-disco tunage

Monster Mash

MONSTER MASH!! Although I know that for every quality mashup made there is probably a hundred horrible ones, I'm a fan of the mashes and I definitely think they have a place on N.C.  If you dig 'em too, then your in luck and this is for you.  Every week, I will bring you a handful of mashup gems for your listening pleasure.
Here's the next installment, enjoiiii.
Download: Pretty Lights vs Westside Connection - Mr. Physix
This is Pretty Light's "If I Could Feel Again" mixed with the Westside Connections "Bow Down," the rap group where Ice Cube got his start.
Download: Ain't I A Joker - A-Trak
This is off A-Trak's "Dirty Dance 2," and it mixes Joker's dubstep hit "Tron," with the mainstream hip hop hit "Ain't I" by Yung LA, T.I. and Y0ung Dro.
Download: Red Dress Turnin' Me On (Keri Hilson vs The Glitch Mob vs TV on the Radio) - The Hood Internet
I love the beat on this track, it's the Glitch Mob's remix of TV on the Radio's "Red Dress," it's some fire and the vocals from Keri mix well.
Download: Beat Beaty Bye Bye (Ratatat vs Cypress Hill) - Radio Vampiro
So this is a beat from one of the best songs on Ratatat's remix cd, it's a remix of Memphis Bleek's "Alright," -sample that if you haven't heard it.  The Cypress Hill vocals from "Boom Biddy Bye Bye" mash incredibly well on this beat, love this mash.
Download: None Shall Get Up And Pass (Aesop Rock vs The Rosebuds) - The Hood Internet
Really sweet mash of the Rosebud's "Get Up" and Aesop's "None Shall Pass."  Not much else to be said, just listen..
Download: The Fly Scientist - Drake & Coldplay
I should have thought of this one, these songs fit together almost too well.  This is a favorite of my buddy Angus', Drake and Coldplay are literally his two all time favorite artists.

There's your weekly mash for your stash. later...

Masters of Production

The Beat Laboratory
I've always been one who has appreciated a really good beat, even if the rap on it isn't as great.  Today I wanted to bring you some songs with sick beats, and lucky for you the rappers on the tracks are some of the best.  Today I've got tracks from two of the best hip hop producers of all time who have greatly changed the face of hip hop.  Ladies and Gentlemen, Hi-Tek and DJ Premier, legends in the art of production.

For clarification, Reflection Eternal is Talib Kweli + Hi Tek, Gang Starr is DJ Premier + Guru.

Download: The Blast Ft. Vinia Mojica - Reflection Eternal this song changed hip hop
Download: Where It All Started At (New York) - Hi Tek, Raekwon, Talib Kweli, Jadakiss & Papoose
Download: My Piano - Hi Tek, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah & Dion

Download: Rite Where U Stand Ft. Jadakiss - Gang Starr

Castles Made Of... Crystals?

Jimi Hendrix might be disappointed.. but I know you won't be after this post.  Crystal Castles is not the easiest group to describe, they are a mix of mostly electronic with touches of rock and punk that come together for incredibly harmonious and melancholic music.  They are out of Toronto, Canada and are comprised of producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass.  It's evident if you follow this duo that they actually do not know how to smile.  You could literally go through a hundred of their pictures and still be smile-less.

see what I mean?
Their self titled 2010 album "Crystal Castles" did incredibly well, but I'm not surprised, as there are a ton of great tracks on the record.  I'm not as big of a fan of their new EP, "Celestica," I think their self titled work outshines it by far.  Crystal Castles have toured with bands such as Nine Inch Nails, if that helps you figure out where their head is at.  They are known to have really exciting and entertaining live shows, in fact they are playing in Dallas at the House of Blues on Sept. 14th, you should check that out.
Enjoiiiii the tunes...
Download: Crimewave - Crystal Castles
Download: Vanished - Crystal Castles
Download: Intimate - Crystal Castles
Download: Screwed Empathy (Skratch Bastid Mix) - Crystal Castles vs. Outkast & Raekwon This mix reminds me of a freestyle Big Boi did for Pitchfork.tv on Crystal Castle's "Empathy" beat, check it out after the jump(keep your eyes for an outkast post)
Download: Baptism - Crystal Castles this song makes me understand why their myspace genre is thrash/thrash/thrash.

You Can't Stop Him Now

The RZA is not only a producer, he is a rapper and actor as well, but it is safe to say his true calling lies in his production skills.  Next to DJ Premier, Hi Tek and J Dilla, RZA is up there as one of the best hip hop producers of all time.  Somewhat of the leader of Wu Tang, he produced every Wu Tang Album, he has solo work under the name Bobby Digital and he makes appearances on a lot of the Wu Tang members solo projects as well. I actually just saw him in this movie called "Repo Me," and he played the part of a dying music producer really well, surprise there.  His acting does not stop there, he just got a deal for Nike (what?!?) and will be featured in three commercials, peep those after the jump.  Check these tunes out, they are soo fire.

Download: Grits - RZA

peace.

Lazy Sunday: Chill Dubstep Pt. 1

Serious lazy Sunday in effect right now, I'm recovering from my birthday weekend.. it was pretty wild.  What better than some sweet chill dubstep music to relax to, nothing too grimy, just some of the best music there is to chill to.  You might have heard a few of these tracks, but they are dope nonetheless.  This is part one of the "Chill Dubstep" post, so check back in a week or so for the second installment if you dig these..

Download: Jahova - Rusko

Enjoy em! PEACE.

Featured Artist: LightsoverLA

LightsoverLA is best known for his remixes, I know that he has been hot on my radar since I first heard his remix of Two Door Cinema Club's "What You Know" a while back.  LightsoverLA's style is the future of dance and electronic music; he is a really versatile cat, not specific to one area at all, he even has a few dubstep remixes.  He used to be in a rock band, maybe this is why he is so multifaceted, but whatever the reason, LightsoverLA is awesome.

Download: Push/Rise (LightsoverLA Remix) - Wolfgang Gartner daft punk sample love ittt

Later..

**UPDATE
So LightsoverLA noticed our post featuring him here on NC and he gave us a shoutout on his facebook page, check it out!  Anyways, thanks to LightsoverLA, and I will be keeping all you updated on his new music..

Street Sweeper Social Club

This post piggy-backs off the last one, and it is for me more than anything because I'm not sure you will like this as much as I do, but I think you might.  Anyway, this is Street Sweeper Social Club, they are a new Rock/Rap group made up of Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine and Boots Riley, a rapper from the classic rap group the Coup, complete with the afro and lambchop 'burns.  They make some freaking raw music, it's got a definite aftertaste of Rage, but I think that's a good thing.
Check out this track from these Street Sweeper, it's called "100 Little Curses"

Back To My Roots

(From left) Tom Morello, Raekwon, Travis Barker, The RZA
So it's my birthday today and I'm stoked, so in tribute to that I'm throwing up a post that takes me back to my roots.  Growing up, for a while all I really heard was my brother's music, so as he went in and out of music phases, as did I, although maybe a little behind.  The crucial thing is he listened to good music, so I first heard artists like Wu Tang Clan, Notorious B.I.G. and Rage Against The Machine from him at a young age.  I still am a really huge fan of all of these artists, even though he's not, but I'm really glad he introduced me.

The reason I am reminiscing on this is because I came across this article talking about Travis Barker's collaborations on his new solo album. His new album has potential to be really tight, on it he's got Raekwon and The RZA of Wu-Tang and Tom Morello, the guitar genius behind Rage Against The Machine.  I have a feeling this is going to be really high energy, really tight stuff.  The picture above a still from the music video for "Carry It."  I can't wait for that to drop in September.  This collaboration reminds me of song I really like that's a Rage Against The Machine official remix of the Clan's "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nothin' To Fuck Wit."  I'm not gonna lie, it's a really raw song, probably better than the original, check it out yo.

im out.

Curren$y is a funny dude

I feel like I have been posting a lot of videos lately, but this one is absolutely hilarious.  This is Wiz and Curren$y being interviewed by some MTV reporter, just obviously high as shit, it's SO funny the answers these guys give her.  To her credit, she actually handles it really well and plays it cool, but even she can't take it seriously after a while.  Wiz might be so high he can't talk, but Spitta is a hilarious dude, check this out

"I am a botanist, by trade.. I do have a green thumb, as well as a green index and pinky"

Shoutout to my buddy Eric, he just showed me this other video.. in it, Curren$y is featured on a "The Smoking Section" sponsored show called Mythblazers.  It's basically the high version of Mythbusters, and it's soo hilarious, Curren$y says some of the funniest shit, seems like the most hilarious dude to be around, check it out after the jump.

Here's some tunes from Spitta and Wiz.

Download: Goodbye - Wiz Khalifa
MUST DL! this track is suchhh fire, love that chorus.  Wiz doesn't go home cause he goes soo hard.  Hah you'll get that one after you listen to the track...
Download: Smokin' Good - Wiz Khalifa
I love them both but all these two rap about is weed, seriously, that's it.

Download: Chilled Coughee Ft. Devin The Dude - Curren$y
This is a fire track off "Pilot Talk," which is a great album.  Curren$y does his thing and has dope rhymes all over the album -- and with features from Mikey Rocks, Snoop, Big K.R.I.T., Devin The Dude, Smoke DZA, Jay Electronica and Mos Def, it's one of the hip hop albums of the year.
Download: Smokin' Trees Ft. Curren$y & Chop Black - Yukmouth
"ille be smokin trees in belize when they find me"

I'm hittin' the lake later today, PEACE..

Refresh Yourself

Today I've got a medley of refreshing tracks for you, nothing too genre specific, some more new than others, but all some reeaallllyy sweet songs I've been spinnin' a lot lately that I think you will like.
Download: Tomorrow (Club Mix) - Dada Life ft. Tara McDonald, Dmitri Vegas and Like Mike
Brand new track from Dada Life who have been mixing everything they can get their hands on lately.  This is a sweet upbeat dance track, I love the piano during the build and it's got a nice melody while Tara McDonald lays down lovely vocals per usual.
Download: We'll Be Fine - Subskrpt
This original mix from Subskrpt is not of his usual style, throwing wobble around all over the place, but its still dub and its absolute FIRE.  I just can't get this song out of my head, and to be honest, I don't really want to.
Download: Deli - Delorean
Delorean is one of my new favorite groups; the Catelonian Dance-Rock powerhouse hails from Barcelona and they are doing things their own way.  While they have chill airy melodies and pop-like vocals, they also have dancefloor fit upbeat step rhythm that makes for some great original work.
Download: Stuck In The System - Joker
I don't mind being stuck in the system, if the system is this song.. this is another banger from the UK producer Joker, and, do I hear violin in there?? Yes I do.  This is progressive stuff, he uses the violin alongside raw wobble while incorporating stops into the song like none other, it all adds up to a fire dubstep jam.
Download: Dance Yrself Clean - LCD Soundsystem **link removed by request**
Although it may seem a long way in, just be patient, enjoy the buildup and listen to the drop at 3:08, ahhh i love it..and this track as a whole.  Oh yeah, this is the track that KiD CuDI samples in "All Talk" with Chip Tha Ripper
Download: Battling Go-Go Yubari in Downtown L.A. - eDIT
Hard not to get your head noddin' on this one, this is a super glitchy track from eDIT of The Glitch Mob.  The extent of my knowledge is that eDIT, Boreta and Ooah all make up The Glitch Mob and they all do solo work as well.. anyways, this is some hot shit from eDIT.
Download: The Island Pt. 2 (Barletta Remix) - Pendulum *link removed by request*
Last but definitely not least, this track's from Barletta, he is currently blowing up in front of our eyes.. here's a remix of Pendulum's crazy intense song The Island Pt. 2, it's got some sweeeet drops, its so hype and nuts, I love it..

Enjoy the tunage.  Later..

Monster Mash

This is the first installment of my new weekly segment, The Monster Mash.  I know that for every quality mashup made there is probably a hundred horrible ones, but still, I'm a fan of the mashes and I definitely think they have a place on N.C.  If you dig 'em too, then your in luck and this is for you.  Every week, I will bring you a few mashup gems for your listening pleasure.  Here's the first installment, enjoiiii

really chill mashup with a trance sound and nice smooth vocals from Haley.
gotta wonder, did the song or the title come first?
Download: When's The Last Time I Left You (Clipse vs. The Avalanches) - The Hood Internet
This is a personal favorite.  I like this one because the original Clipse song kind of has an annoying beat, that even Pusha can't stand, this is a great mashup on a sweeeet avalanches song with a sick build.
Free Weezy? Anybody? this is a dope mashup with vocals from Wayne's "Stuntin' Like My Daddy," and in my opinion, one of the greatest hip hop instrumentals of all time, RJD2'S "Ghostwriter."
Who would have thought the Hieroglyphic's and Genesis (Phil Collins) would make such a tight, catchy mash like this?
I really like both songs, Shooting Stars and Superman, but together I think this version might be the best of 'em all.

So there you go, your weekly fix of mash for your stash, 'till next time.... PEACE.

Fighting Gravity

I'm not really one to watch America's Got Talent, but I just happened to come across this video of a group called "Fighting Gravity" performing on the show.  It's an unbelievable human puppet dance show, it appears that a puppeteer is controlling three people, attached by a string of trippy green orbs, when really there are like ten other guys wearing all black acting as puppeteers moving around everything and everybody around.  Note how lame of a host Nick Cannon is (I'm pretty sure thats him). What's really unbelievable about these guys is that they are all fraternity brothers at Virginia Tech, and none of them have any dance experience at all.  They just came together and started this project in early 2009 to perform at the philanthropy event, Anchor Splash.  Oh yeah, and the song in the video is Drive It Like You Stole It by Glitch Mob Yuhhhh.
Download: Drive It Like You Stole It - The Glitch Mob
This is glitch-hop at it's best, this track is off the Mob's most recent cd, "Drink The Sea,"
which has not gotten much acclaim, but I freakin love it..

Brand New + Bassnectar + Beatles, BIG!!!

*BASSNECTAR. PALLADIUM, OCTOBER 2ND. OH FUCK YES*
I've got a huuge post coming right at your face, so you best prepare yourself - BASSNECTAR.  He's hands down the most energetic and exciting dubstep producer out there right now, and he has just been killing it lately.  Lorin's got the midas touch of dubstep, everything he lays production on becomes filth immediately.  Today I've got two Beatles' song remixes and a new track from Bassnectar, who himself said "This is brand new, I made this song this week with my buddy" when he unveiled it last weekend in Masontown, WV.  So fresh he hasn't even named it yet!, so it's "Untitled" for now, but check it out and stay tuned for the name. As for the Beatles' remixes, the remix of "Strawberry Fields Forever," from the same show, is new and absolutely fire, sickk first drop.  The last tune is a Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds remix that bangs as well.  God I can't wait till he's in Dallas, it's gonna be bumpin!
Download:Strawberry Fields Forever (Bassnectar Remix) - The Beatles
WOMP!
Download:"Untitled" - Bassnectar
this is brand new, barely a week old! ...really gets goin about 1:30 into the song.
Download:Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - (Bassnectar Remix) - The Beatles
another tight beatles remix

**Bonus
Download:Teleport Massive (Bassnectar Remix) - Bassnectar
just because i love it

Enjoy the music.  Chickenfuckers

Featured Artist: Tennis

Last night I was down in in Clemson, South Carolina visiting some friends and having a good time, so this first song seems very suitable. No doubt about it, Tennis makes some great summer jams, and some really cool art on their album cover as well.

For those interested, there is a pretty wild story behind this group. Tennis is made up a husband and wife from Denver, who packed up and left on an eight month sail on their boat. They recorded their entire album "South Carolina" on the voyage, which is pretty amazing.

I really like this Marathon song
